Sponsorship of up to £15,000 for an overseas bursary at a suitable university or management institute of your choice
USIT is committed to providing funds for overseas studies. This is seen as an integral part of increasing skills levels in the utilities industries.
This award will be open to any individual and will support attendance at an overseas study course, e.g. the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland, which offers executive education programs for top management development and provides a real world learning experience. Alternatively, where they can be proven to be of benefit to a utility industry, secondments to other English speaking organizations overseas may be considered.
Awards will be limited to £15,000 and it is recognized that employers may need to finance additional costs. Awards are limited to reimbursement of fees, economy travel and accommodation and £20 per day meal allowance (unless provided within accommodation). Other expenses or entertainment are specifically excluded.
Employers can top up the money offered by USIT, provided the employer’s contribution is no more than that made by USIT. In other words, with your employer's agreement, you can apply for £15k from USIT to attend a course costing up to £30k.
It is anticipated that only one Management Award will be made in any given year.
How to apply
To enter candidates will be asked to write a short paper in support of their application based on why they have chosen the course and what the development provided will do for the individual, his/her company and the industry as a whole in the years to follow.

General Conditions
- Applications for support will only be received from individuals who can demonstrate they have the support of their employer and that their application will be beneficial to the public.
- USIT will adopt an inclusive definition of the utilities industries to encompass partner organisations which have framework agreements or period contracts in place for a period in excess of three years. The definition also includes regulators.
- Proposals must not replicate or substitute those activities which should be undertaken by responsible employers as part of their ongoing staff training and development programmes.
- Distance learning programmes may be supportable as may career change programmes provided they satisfy the other criteria.
- Exchanges with overseas utility companies and other organisations could be supportable if they will yield benchmarking outcomes and encourage the sharing of best practice.
